Day 1
Limerick is a fine Georgian city and ideal for exploring the Shannon region. Within the city lies King John’s Castle built circa 1200, with fine ramparts and interesting archeological and historical exhibitions. The castle overlooks the majestic river Shannon offering wonderful views of Limerick city. Visit the nearby Hunt Museum which exhibits a unique internationally renowned private collection of over 2,000 original works of art and antiquity collected by John and Gertrude Hunt over their lifetimes.
In the afternoon drive to Ireland's most picturesque village, Adare, and explore Adare Heritage Centre which also includes a restaurant, woollen and craft shop.
Day 2
Explore Co. Clare ‘Land of Castles’, tracing its earliest celtic civilisation at Craggaunowen, the Living Past, then to Bunratty Castle and Folk Park, restored 15th Century Castle surrounded by Folk Park of thatched dwellings and 18th Century village street. Drive to the lovely coast of Clare via busy market town of Ennis and visit ‘Riches of Clare’ exhibition at the Clare Museum.
From Ennis visit Kilrush Heritage Town en route to the spectacular Cliffs of Moher Visitor Centre. The Cliffs stretch for 8 kms and are 214 metres over the Atlantic Ocean and are truly breathtaking natural wonder.
Day 3
Day tour of the Burren country's unique limestone landscape, rich in Neolithic archaeological remains. Visit the fascinating show caves within the deep caverns of the Aillwee Cave in Ballyvaughan, Co Clare where you can also experience the Burren Birds of Prey Centre which is home to the largest display of falcons, hawks, owls and kestrels in the country.
In the afternoon learn the history of the Burren's rare flora and fauna at the Burren Centre in Kilfenora and see a fine example of early Celtic civilisation at Caherconnell Stone Fort outside Kilfenora.
Day 4
Completing the suggested tour of Ireland's Shannon region today takes in the lovely region around Lough Derg, the largest lake on the River Shannon. A full afternoon is worth devoting to Birr Heritage Town where Birr Castle Demesne contains award winning gardens as well as Ireland's Historic Science Centre and the famous Great Telescope. Complete the Shannon region by driving on the heritage town of Roscrea which has a proud and ancient history going back many centuries. Roscrea leaves you ideally positioned to head on to Dublin or return to Limerick.
