Saint Patrick's Cathedral has contributed much to Irish life throughout its long history (it was founded in 1191). Jonathan Swift was Dean from 1713-1745. Music plays and integral part in the daily life of the Cathedral; the choir sings two services every day during school terms, the only Cathedral to do so on these island. Handel's Messhiah received its first performance in 1742 sung by the combined choirs of saint Patrick's and Christ Church Cathedrals. Last weekday admission 17.00 except for those wishing to attend services. Last Sunday admission 30 minutes before services.

The Cathedral's permanent exhibition, Living Stones, uses a combination of original documents, images, artefacts and display panels which explain the history and role of the Cathedral within the Church of Ireland, the city of Dublin and the Irish nation. Used in conjunction with the guidebook, A Short Tour of St. Patrick's, the exhibition provides a rich source of information relevant to both primary and secondary schools' history, religious education, literature, music and art programmes. There is a great deal of material which is particularly relevant to programmes oriented to mutual understanding. Worksheets available include “The Birds and Beasts of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin”, “Music and Munitions of St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin” and “The Young Person's Guide to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin.” The Education Pack Schools Visits to St. Patrick's Cathedral, Dublin can be used for both Primary and Secondary schools and has potential for imaginative teaching for transition year groups
