Rothe House is an Irish merchant’s townhouse built between 1594 and 1610. The property comprises three houses, three enclosed courtyards and a large garden. John Rothe Fitzpiers, a wealthy merchant and landowner in Kilkenny, built the House as his residence and place of business. It is now owned by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society and serves as their headquarters.
Open to the public as a museum, the House is the Family History Centre of Kilkenny City & County. It is the only house of its type in Ireland open to the public.
The reconstructed 17th century garden has two enclosed spaces, with a large Orchard to the west beside the City Wall, and a pleasure garden and vegetable garden to the east beside the Third House. The planting is authentic, using only plants which would have been available in the early 17th century. We have introduced six ducks which help to keep slugs at bay and provide us with a constant supply of eggs!

The museum at Rothe House contains a variety of artefacts of archaeological and historical interest, most of them found locally or donated by citizens of Kilkenny to the Kilkenny Archaeological Society.

Our collection of artefacts appears on rotation throughout each year and includes pewter ware, stone axe heads, a Viking sword, old prints, plan of the old Kilkenny Theatre and much more.

A collection of quern or millstones can also be seen in the second courtyard.

The Rothe House Garden is a recreation of a historic garden from the 17th century. It is the only urban garden of this period which is open to the public. It was officially opened by the President of Ireland, Mary McAleese, on 11th April 2008.

The reconstruction was undertaken by the Kilkenny Archaeological Society and Rothe House Trust, and was funded by Failte Ireland under the NDP 2000-2006, Kilkenny Borough Council and Kilkenny Civic Trust.
